Hotel rooms are a place for visitors to unwind, rest and recuperate. Whether staying for business or pleasure, occupants should have the assurance that they have a quiet and peaceful hotel room to return to. Incidentally, the intended purpose of hotels is to support a mix of people staying in one, concentrated space.Â
With this comes its sound challenges; the conversations of patrons in neighbouring rooms, footsteps in corridors, music from nearby entertainment venues.
All this noise can greatly impact the quality of the stay and likelihood of returning. A recent survey by J.D Powers found ‘noise’ on top of the list of traveller’s complaints in hotel stays. In particular, the presence of unwanted noise when sleeping can lead to stress and other serious health problems.
So, what can be done?
Hotels can still support a mixed range of uses and occupancy so long as the requisite acoustic measures are put in place. This means factoring in high-traffic areas like corridors and lobbies, and ensuring that sound reverberation is kept to a minimum. It also means limiting the transmission of sound between hotel rooms, as well as introducing soundproofing materials to prevent noise external to the hotel building from infiltrating the rooms.
Acoufelt’s interior soundscaping products are designed to absorb sound, reduce reverberation and limit sound transmission in hotel environments. Not only do Acoufelt offer a full suite of floor, wall and ceiling products appropriate for hotels, but we can also assist with acoustic consultations, delivery, installation, furniture removal, as well as a number of other services. We also offer custom designs across each of our collections.
The floor often represents the largest practical surface for acoustic treatment. Installing acoustic carpet tiles can be advantageous in multi-level spaces to absorb sounds of footfall, as well as other mid-frequency sounds, making them perfect for hotel room and corridor settings.
The highest performing commercially graded acoustic carpet tiles in the Acoufelt floor offering feature QuietBackâ„¢. Our QuietBackâ„¢ carpet tiles offer a minimum NRC range of 0.35-0.40 and are offered across a range of designs, colorways and thicknesses. Our carpet tiles have also been designed to be comfortable underfoot, and have a backing made from a minimum 80% recycled PET material.
Our most popular carpet tile collections for hotel settings include ‘Borough’, ‘Flinders’ and ‘Urban’.
Walls offer a variety of opportunities for acoustic treatment with Acoufelt’s wide collection of products, available in an array of sizes, colors, prints, cuts, and designs.
Depending on your acoustic and aesthetic needs, select from our regular panels, printed panels, wall shapes and tiles. Full panels are effective for mid-frequency sound generated by voice, and should be installed to sit at or above head height. Designers may also opt for panels from our printed collection to work within a particular theme, or submit their own custom images for reproduction. For the best acoustic results, install panels on adjacent walls.
Depending on the ceiling system available to you, Acoufelt offers a mix of practical, easy-install acoustic ceiling products.
For areas requiring a targeted approach – such as a noisy hotel lobby or dining area – ceiling clouds or ceiling baffles can be hung above, offering a large surface area for acoustic absorption. Drop-in ceiling tiles or high performing acoustic ceiling panels can also be stuck directly to the ceiling, offering an excellent NRC value of up to 1.00.
As part of the Novotel Barossa Valley’s refurbishment project, over 420 custom printed acoustic panels were supplied and installed across guest rooms to create a feature wall effect, whilst also serving as a means for absorbing excess sound. A subtle integration of highlight colors within the panel print would capture the essence of the surrounding Barossa Valley, whilst also complementing the other furnishings of the interior to create a harmonious aesthetic finish.
Full Color panels in colors ‘Wasabi’ and ‘Carrot’ were selected to cover some of the interior walls of Singapore Management University’s Container Lodge Hostel. Offering an NRC of 0.45, these panels were installed to reduce reverberation in the area between guest rooms and the corridor thoroughfare, whilst also adding bold color to the space.
